Spotlight on Facility Database

Reduces workloads and saves money

Amanda Russell Amanda Russell, One-Call’s GIS/database Coordinator, will tell you that one of the biggest challenges she and the GIS team faces is getting members to understand the value of updating their facility database.

Russell says, “Any of our members who still use range, township and section (grid) database can be over notified because of the grid database limitation.” And it’s for this reason that she encourages all members to convert to a spatial database. This is made possible as the result of the accurate land base map maintained by One-Call.

The good news is that you don’t have to understand any part of the technical jargon to take advantage of the savings. You have Russell and the GIS team to help you make a successful transition.

If you are unable to GPS your system and you don’t have digital maps, you can still be included. If your underground facilities run along the roadside, you can use a paper map to highlight all the roads where you have underground facilities. If your service covers an entire incorporated city, just outline the city limits and any roads that extend into the county that you have services on. And Russell says, “If you cannot get an updated paper map, we’ll be happy to provide you with one at no charge.”
If you are looking to maximize savings for your utility and possibly cut down on unnecessary workloads for your staff, give the GIS team a call today at 601-368-1150 and let them help you convert to a spatial database.
