Me and Dillard, Volume III, Issue II

Winter was winding down!  Green grass and old robin redbreast hopping around catching worms announced better days ahead. And one of the things that it meant was, warm enough to sit on the front porch, hear great stories and watch all the critters scurrying to and fro. After all these years, I can still close [...]

It’s all about who wants to know you

“Hi, Jerry! It’s Jack. I met a guy that I think you should know.”  That’s how the phone call started; he proceeded to tell me about this young guy that he had met. “When I was talking with him, I kept thinking of you.  He’s your kind of guy!”  My ears perked up. He had [...]

So much for lever pullers

by Jr. Grantham My dad taught me to be an operator, not a “lever puller.” If you were at the controls of a piece of equipment my dad owned, you were responsible for keeping it running. If I tore it up, I had to stay and fix it. As a result, I learned the value [...]

Would anyone be interested and would anyone show up? The Batesville response was clearly encouraging to all who made the effort to be there.

From the Desk of Sam Johnson, Volume III, Issue II

Perhaps you’ve already noticed a change on the front cover of our magazine. We’ve changed our name from Mississippi One-Call to Mississippi 811. This was a board decision to incorporate the national 811 “call before you dig” number into our official name as a reminder of how important making that initial call is. Of course [...]

Publisher’s Perspective, Volume III, Issue II

If there is any one secret of success, it lies within the ability to get the other person’s view and see things from that person’s perspective as well as our own. Effective damage prevention is not now nor will it ever be about limiting liability when there is an incident. Effective damage prevention is infinitely [...]

Are you hiring the right person?

Hiring the right person is a real challenge, and people are looking for a “silver bullet” to ensure success. As you know, there is no silver bullet. To some degree, hiring new employees is like playing the dice game, craps … luck. Consider for a moment some of the variables that influence performance that can [...]
